Homemade Orange Honey Butter Recipe

This lightly sweetened whipped orange honey butter is wonderful served as a spread for quick breads, muffins, waffles, rolls, pancakes, or scones.

Orange Honey Butter recipe

A few weeks ago I made pancakes for breakfast and decided to whip up a batch of orange honey butter. It’s smooth, creamy, and lightly sweetened, and I realized I had never shared this simple flavored butter here before. This spread brightens up warm rolls for holiday dinners and is a lovely addition to a Mother’s Day or Easter brunch. It also pairs beautifully with orange buttermilk pancakes and waffles any day of the year.

One of the best things about this orange honey butter recipe is how quick it is to make. With a mixer you can have it whipped in under five minutes. If you prefer to prepare ahead, you can make it a few days in advance and refrigerate it until needed. For a pretty presentation, spread the butter on plastic wrap, roll it into a log, chill or freeze, and cut 1/2-inch disks to top warm bread or pancakes as desired.

  1. Beat the room-temperature butter with an electric mixer until smooth and creamy.
  2. Add the powdered sugar, honey, orange juice, and vanilla. Beat until the mixture is light and fluffy, scraping the bowl once or twice.

Now it’s your turn! Let us know what you’re loving this week and share your favorite recipes and ideas.

The texture of this orange honey butter is light and spreadable when whipped well. If you prefer a firmer butter for slicing, chill the mixture until it holds its shape. For a more pronounced orange flavor, add a teaspoon of finely grated orange zest. If you want a subtler sweetness, reduce the powdered sugar by a tablespoon. The balance of honey and orange juice gives a natural sweetness and citrus brightness that complements both sweet and slightly savory baked goods.

Storage and make-ahead tips: keep the butter in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to a week. For longer storage, you can freeze the log of butter, wrapped tightly, for up to three months; thaw in the refrigerator before slicing. When serving chilled butter on hot pancakes or rolls, allow a minute for the butter to soften and melt slightly for the best flavor release.

Serving suggestions: spread it on warm dinner rolls at holiday meals, dollop on top of pancakes or waffles, serve with scones and muffins for brunch, or use as a finishing butter for roasted sweet potatoes or winter squash for an orange-honey glaze. It also makes a thoughtful homemade gift—package the chilled log in parchment or plastic wrap, tie with a ribbon, and add a handwritten label describing the flavor and suggested uses.
